A Truth About Parents and Grandparents

A Truth About Parents and Grandparents

Proverbs 17.6 Children’s children are a crown to the aged,
and parents are the pride of their children.

Grandparenting has changed a lot in the past 50 years!
My grandmother, Ruth Mancini
My grandparents, Livy and Rose Biggs

It was always a joy to be together. My grandmothers had an enormous influence on my early development as a young believer.
My Nana, Rose Biggs, was with me until I was into my 30's and was such an example of faith. From a 15 cent  a month investment she made back in 1929 with Prudential I received a check this week for $350 which is going to Haiti for the roof.

My kids' grandparents... Mom and Dad
My kids always loved when they visited... still do and now her great grandkids.

Now...

Youthism
Aging Population
This is our culture. Families I have stayed with in China and Haiti have brought aging mothers into their homes and taken care of them. Pastor Joes' mother's grave is on his property.

This verse written by Solomon 3,000 years ago
Speaks to family life...
Speaks to our nation's spiritual life
Our poor nation needs God. Brentwood  and Jericho High School Graduation Ceremony this morning... listen to this broken hearted Congressman from Texas, Randy Weber pray recently in the Capital Building in Washington DC, the people's house.

Speaks to the Natural Order which is being tampered with today. I shudder to think of what harvest some of the seeds which are now sown are going to bring! We are sowing to the wind and we are about to reap a whirlwind!

Let's look this morning at what this sentence from God is saying to us individually.

It is a

1. A Fact to Be Enjoyed.

Grandkids are God's reward for not killing your own kids.
"If I knew how much fun it was going to be to have grandkids I would have skipped the kids and gone right to the grandkids!" - Dr. Dallas Mucci

Children's children... biological similarities, personality similarities, mannerisms

Crown=to surround
crown-bestower (participle)

Aged=
old
elder (of those having authority)

Root Word=
to be old, become old
to grow old, show age

Grandchildren surround their Grandparents and crown them with blessings.
* Joy and Laughter
* The ability to enjoy children with minimal responsibilities.
*  Free expressions of love that we would never have thought of.
Emma calling me her mentor.
* The feeling of youthfulness and the ability to enjoy things we enjoyed as a kid. My mom loves to play games. Her great grandkids play with her. I love to swim. My grandkids too. The other night I was tired. First day of summer... in the pool with those kids, came home and slept like a baby.
* Fun

To the grandchildren...
Nothing can please your grandparents more than for you to talk to them and be around them (once in a while). Listen to them. Love them! Honor them. Respect them.
I have all the letters my grandmother wrote to me and one stays on my desk.

As Grandparents we can have a great influence on our grandkids. When grandparents go to be with the LORD Aunts and Uncles can step in. We become spiritual parents and grandparents to young people. I have a growing number of kids calling me Poppa these days. Kimberly in Haiti, others down there, riding my bike home last evening... "Pop!" Mayor McDermott's daughter and two others.

2. A Truth That Has Been Rejected

Parents are the pride of their children.

Pride= (Not as we think)
beauty, splendour, glory
finery (of garments, jewels)
of rank, renown
as attribute of God
honour (or nation Israel)
boasting (of individual)
"My Dad is stronger than your Dad."
Pastor Kevin Henesy and I stopping at my Dad and Mom's on our way to a Pastor's Conference. Mom's Italian Chicken Dish

Parents who have integrity, work hard and love their families will be remembered and honored. Love people your kids will take pride in that. My cousins and I often talk of how hard our Dads worked. I worked with them both as a young man. What great memories! Yesterday with my grandsons. Put them to work!

They know us.

Today:
The Lie
Old is over.
I don't know if 40 is the new 60 but I know at 61 years of age I am more active than I dreamed of.

The Truth
Retirement... Really do not know anyone here that is retired in a traditional sense. Freed up to do God's work. No one here sitting around!

"I want to encourage senior citizens because there is a lot you can do then you were not able to do when you were younger."- Art Alexander

Wisdom is found in the aged. It is a shame that more of the young people in America do not realize that. China and Haiti age are honored. I have the title among several as "Father".

3. The Truth That Needs To Be Embraced.

We may not feel this way but this is the Word of God. We have such a unique opportunity in this time.

It gives us self worth.

It is a warning.
Our boast is to be in the LORD. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus' Name.

It is a model.

It is a joy!

We need to seek the LORD diligently!

Our Father In Heaven

Our Father In Heaven

Matthew 6.9-13

Father's Day used to be a day when families honored their fathers. While that is still done because of blended families and broken homes and single moms and "same sex parents" other issues it has become a complicated day. With the rise of abuse and divorce and the horror of father abandoning their children this day is painful for many. I admire those who through God's strength forgive and persevere.

Is there hope on this day? There is always hope when you have Jesus!

Look to God's Word and think of Him as our Father, which He is! This day can be redeemed for those struggling. For those who had good fathers we can reflect on their lives and be blessed. For those fathers on earth, our Father in heaven is to be our model. For all of us we can reflect on God Our Father In Heaven today.

I love this verse in Psalm 27.10
If my mother or father forsake me the LORD will take me up.
Forsake= to depart from, leave behind, leave, let alone, abandon, neglect
to let loose, set free, let go, free

Take me up= gather together, be gathered as to our fathers

The Forever Family, the Eternal One, the one that all believers will be with forever is the Family of God. If we are forsaken or left behind or abandoned or neglected by our family on earth the LORD will take us up!

1. He is in Heaven.

Psalm 115.3 Our God is in heaven; He does whatever pleases Him.

He sees all.
We read this week in Proverbs 15.3 The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good.

He rules overall.

He can take the most difficult situations and turn the around for good for us and for His glory. Amazing! Romans 8.28

He is able to do more than we could ever ask or imagine according to His power that is at work within us! Ephesians 3.19

God, the Father is on His Throne in Heaven.

Psalm 93.2 Your Throne was established long ago. You are from all eternity.

Psalm 103.11 The LORD has established His throne in heaven, and His Kingdom rules over all.

2. This is My Father's World

Revelation 4.11
“You are worthy, our LORD and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for You created all things,
and by Your will they were created
    and have their being.”

Psalm 135.6 The LORD does whatever pleases Him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.

He wants to commune with us each day, each moment.
Proverbs 3.32 For the LORD detests the perverse but takes the upright into His confidence.
He lets us know what is up in the world and in Body of Christ. He brings expectations to our hearts of what He is going to do.

Psalm 138.6 For though the LORD is exalted, Yet He regards the lowly, But the haughty He knows from afar.

We have a personal relationship with Almighty God, the Maker of Heaven and Earth.

3. He is Perfect.

He disciplines us for our good.
All through Proverbs... 3.5-6, 7-12
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and shun evil.
8 This will bring health to your body
    and nourishment to your bones.
9 Honor the LORD with your wealth,
    with the firstfruits of all your crops;
10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing,
and your vats will brim over with new wine.
11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline,
and do not resent His rebuke,
12 because the LORD disciplines those He loves,
as a father the son he delights in.

He instructs us.
Proverbs 15.5

We are to be like Him!

Matthew 5.48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

We will be like Him!

We are becoming like Him... If we submit to the spirits of our fathers and live.

4. He is the God and Father of Our LORD Jesus Christ. I Peter 1.3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

When we are born again, born from above we enter the Kingdom and the Family of God.

That moment from Jesus a pardon receives!

5. He has Chosen to reveal Himself to us as a Parent, a Father.

Psalm 68.6 God sets the lonely in families...

If we are part of the Family of God we are in the best family on earth.

Father in Heaven How I love You,
I lift Your Name in all the earth,
May Your Kingdom be established in our praises
AsYour people declare Your Mighty Works!

Blessed be the LORD God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come,
Blessed be the LORD God Almighty
Who reigns forevermore
